Julia Feliz Brueck is currently running a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to produce the first board book for little vegan readers! 'Libby Finds Vegan Sanctuary' is based on a true story of how a turkey inspires compassion and ultimately, finds safety on a farm animal sanctuary in Florida. We caught up with Julia to find out more...
I’m thankful to that vegan that randomly posted the link to the film all those years ago. I haven’t looked back since. As most vegans, my only regret was not going vegan sooner! My professional background is in science, but I’ve also always dabbled in the arts at the same time because I could never choose one over the other. On the personal side, I love diving, dancing, knitting, volunteering, and so much more!
What inspired you to want to create the first vegan kids’ board book?
I realized that I could use both my skills as an artist and passion of helping other living beings to create something that would tell an important story that could be used as a resource by vegan parents or those wanting to teach the choice of compassion and kindness to a little person in their life.
Tell us more about the lead protagonist in the story…
The story follows Libby, who is a real life turkey that my mom helped rescue a few years back during Thanksgiving. She convinced a family to let her go. The story is based on Libby’s journey from being a turkey destined to have her life taken for the holiday celebrations to finding safety and family among other sanctuary residents because of a family making the most compassionate choice. The story uses simple story telling and bright colors to help little vegan toddlers understand what sanctuary means and what it means to choose kindness for another living being.
Why is it important to have children’s books that teach on themes of compassion towards animals?
There are so many children’s books that involve animal exploitation out there that we need books that tell stories such as Libby’s to help children understand that there is another choice to be made. That choice is one of compassion where other living beings live their lives free from harm and exploitation.
What can readers do to help make this book a reality?
Readers can pre-order the book through the kickstarter page, follow the book’s facebook page for updates, and further support the kickstarter campaign by sharing Vegan Publisher’s campaign video about the book far and wide.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I also created the book to help support Libby’s care, so a portion of every book sold helps sponsor libby’s food and vet care. When you pre-order/buy one of the books, you’ll be helping Libby at the same time!
